New Beginnings

As we all draw the curtains and the dark nights close in around us, spring seems a long time off. I often feel the seasons are a bit like our lives, we too are in a constant cycle of change. There is always a new beginning eventually, however distant it may sometimes feel. Looking back on the changes I have been through; I can feel regret for thinking that there would be no other beginnings or maybe something slightly better on the horizon.

It’s so easy to resist change. Whatever might be waiting for us around the corner —good or bad—we can think ‘I really didn’t want it. I wanted what I had.’ The present might be too painful, and the future is such an unknown, that uncomfortably mysterious thing lurking. That said, the past is the only thing that we know, it feels somehow secure, and so we kept craving it, wanting to repeat all our old patterns, that have become habit, sometimes old friends, but occasionally our fiends..

Even though we can’t ever bring back the things we have lost, we keep them well and alive in our thoughts and precious memories. When we resist change, we are delaying a process. We postpone the process of things perfectly falling neatly into their place, limiting the chance of bringing joyful spontaneity into our world. We put off the process of meeting the people we were always meant to meet. We delay the process of beauty, hopefully of our newfound happiness.

Everything in life is intentional. There are no closed roads—only bridges. So, honour what has ended because it is undoubtedly leading you to what’s coming next. Slow down and allow your life to unfold naturally. When and if you do, you will save yourself so much pain and discomfort.

It’s normal to resist what we don’t know. Everyone does it. It’s also perfectly normal to grieve, to cry, to be upset and to not be ‘OK’ or ‘fine’, however please don’t fall into the pit of despair.

So please embrace your endings and overcome your resistance to change. Remember, no matter how much your present may look painful, your future looks brighter.
